Third Grade Curriculum


Reading

Students will master the following reading concepts:

•Story mapping

•Characterization

•Semantic webbing

•Sequencing

•Word decoding

•Cause and effect

•Purpose of the author

•Phonetic approach

In addition to the basal reader, the students will read four novels during the school year, as well as complete a creative writing and poetry unit.

Language Arts

The students will identify and apply the usage of:

•Nouns

•Pronouns

•Verbs

•Adjectives

•Adverbs

•Simple subjects and predicates

•Dictionary skills (guide words, pronunciation key)

•Prefixes

•Suffixes

Major writing units within Language Arts will include:

•Complete paragraphs (main idea, supporting details, sequence and closure)

•Compare and contrast

•Descriptive paragraphs

•Personal Narrative

•Letter writing (person and business)

•Persuasive

•Explanatory

•Directional

•Short story

•Research

 

Math

     At the elementary level, math topics are introduced, developed and applied throughout each grade level.  The aim is to provide a balance between computational skills, conceptual understanding and problem solving, while developing mathematical reasoning and critical thinking skills in order to provide a solid foundation for further education. 

      Through the development and understanding of place value, students will expand their knowledge of number operations including fractions and decimals. Students will broaden their understanding of time, measurement and geometric figures through application.  Students gather, organize, display and interpret graphs.  Authentic word problems will be solved using multi-step computation and logical reasoning. 

 

Social Studies

The following units are studied at the third grade level:

•States and capitals

•Nicknames (regions of U.S.)

•Climates

•Products

•Industry

•Energy sources

•Map reading: latitude & longitude, map key, directions

•Understanding coordinates

•Interpreting graphs (bar, line, etc.)

•Time lines

•Flow charts using key vocabulary (first, next, then, last) time-ordered words

•Communication – indirect effect (cultural/effects)

•Current events

 

Science

The following units are studied at the third grade level:

•Plants

•Human Body

•Matter

•Sound

•Rock/soil

•Weather, including clouds and storms

•Work/Simple Machines

•Introduction to Chemistry

•Invention convention
