Language Arts

The writing program embraces the concept that applied effort produces measurable achievement. Writing consistently develops a creative proficiency with words, sentences, paragraphs, stories, and poems. The writing process and evaluations used help to guide students in their purpose and clarity of thought. Students explore and organize topics during the prewriting stage (brainstorming, webbing, discussion, and visual aids). The content is woven into a working draft, and corrections or improvements are made during the editing and revising stages. They reevaluate and reflect on their purpose while proofreading then share their published compositions. The students express their creativity and individualism in a variety of genres (personal narratives, imaginative stories, essays, responses to literature, and content area pieces.)

Within the language arts program, students receive direct instruction on grammar and mechanics. Word usage and expression as well as sentence structure and spelling are necessary components in strengthening the foundation of oral and written communication. Students improve these skills by using language through daily discussion and questioning (literal, inferential, and evaluative responses) in fiction and nonfiction selections. They learn to inform, persuade, and entertain in conversation and composition.

The neatness, legibility, and speed of cursive handwriting are refined, and technology is used as sources of information and pleasure.

Math

At the elementary level, math topics are introduced, developed and applied throughout each grade level.  The aim is to provide a balance between computational skills, conceptual understanding and problem solving, while developing mathematical reasoning and critical thinking skills in order to provide a solid foundation for further education.

Students will represent and interpret mathematical relationships and quantitative expressions through a greater understanding of properties of basic operations.  Common fraction computations are introduced and developed for further understanding. The concept and meaning of decimal usage is introduced. Students will understand the characteristics of geometric figures and planes. Various concepts of measurement will be explored.  An emphasis is placed on using mathematical concepts, skills and language in problem solving.
