Fifth Grade Curriculum


Reading / Language Arts

Correct use and recognition of the six major parts of speech

•Utilize commas correctly

•Use varied sentence structure

•Develop coherent ideas in logical order

•Summarize information

•Interesting hook/attention-grabber

•Clear statement of purpose

•Final summary sentence

•Vivid, active verbs

•Compose business letters

•Compose poetry using imagery, personification, alliteration, metaphor, simile

Math

     At the elementary level, math topics are introduced, developed and applied throughout each grade level.  The aim is to provide a balance between computational skills, conceptual understanding and problem solving, while developing mathematical reasoning and critical thinking skills in order to provide a solid foundation for further education. 

     Students will begin to master fractions and develop a further understanding of decimals and their usage within the place value system.  They will begin to understand and investigate algebraic mathematical expressions. Students will begin to identify the relationship between decimals, fractions and percents.  Knowledge in geometric shapes and relationships will be enhanced.  Students will investigate, develop and evaluate mathematical arguments.

 

Science

Students begin the fifth grade year in science by building their safety & inquiry skills. They will become familiar with safety rules and equipment. They will also learn how to use scientific reference tools. The year involves the study of living and non-living things and the factors that affect them. Other units include the structure and classifying of matter, the human body, reproduction/change of living organisms and forms of energy. Students will refine their observation and descriptive skills through hands-on experiments and demonstrations.

 

Social Studies

The fifth grade will emphasize United States History since 1860, while integrating
elements of history, geography, civics, and economics. The curriculum will introduce the causes and effects of the Civil War and events leading up to modern times. We will be using the United States in Modern Times textbook. Students will learn proper techniques for note taking. In addition, a comprehensive look at current events that have shaped today’s United States will be discussed and analyzed.
