Malon D. Mimms Donates Property to The Atlanta Academy
Roswell, GA….When Angela Naples, Head of School, and Diane Stinger, Vice Principal, stepped up to talk at The Atlanta Academy’s parent night on September 10, the audience was already abuzz over the stunning new facility. No one could have predicted Mrs. Naples’s first announcement: the acceptance of an extraordinary donation of the property from the Malon D.Mimms Company. As if witnessing a miracle, the parents started to cry with joy. “I looked out and didn’t see a dry eye in the place,” Mrs. Naples said. “Even those who knew about it before the meeting were tearing up. After years without a real home, this is the answer to a prayer.” she said.
“I am at a loss for words,” said Lilia Diaz, parent of an eighth grader. “What an emotional night! This generous gift has overwhelmed us with happiness. As one of the families that was there since the beginning, I never doubted for a second that Angela and her team would make a reality out of all our dreams,” Ms. Diaz continued.
The Atlanta Academy, an independent, non-denominational school of 165 students (pre-K-8), recently relocated from Sandy Springs to Roswell, after signing a lease agreement in January 2007 for a 60,000 square foot site. The original agreement included an option to purchase the 2000 Holcomb Woods Parkway property from the Mimms Company. The school anticipated completing the purchase portion of the agreement within five years, but Malon Mimms magnanimously offered to bypass the original contract, and donate the entire facility to the school --approximately 89,000 square feet on almost nine acres of land..
The Atlanta Academy has been overwhelmed by the generosity of this gift and is planning a special event to honor Mr. Mimms and his company. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with the Mayor of Roswell, Jere Wood, the school community and several other officials in attendance.
Mrs. Naples said, “This enables us to take our school to the next level. We have already established an outstanding academic program, but lacked the physical plant to fulfill our dreams and enable us to provide our students with the most advanced and progressive educational programs available. Fundraising is always a challenge for private schools, and a lead gift of this magnitude opens many doors for us. We hope to serve the Roswell and Atlanta community in the same spirit of generosity as Malon Mimms.”
